Augmented Reality Exhibition - Poetry, Illustration & Video

Guardians of Leeds

"Guardians of Leeds" is an innovative AR exhibition in Leeds, UK, led by award-winning South African poet Xabiso Vili. The project invited a group of talented Leeds poets to imagine and re-write the future of the city through the lenses of poetry and speculative fiction. Using murals across the city as a medium, these poets created a visionary narrative of a better, reimagined Leeds, highlighting their hopes and aspirations for the community.

!Habesi

!Habesi, draws attention to the challenges faced by the San/Khoe people in South Africa due to the Land Rights Act, which has a 1913 cut-off date that precludes them from claiming land they were dispossessed of from as early as 1657.

To creatively explore a re-imagined future for the Khoe community without colonial interruption or the erasure of apartheid, we headed out to Upington and interviewed Ouma Katrina, a living legend and Khoi activist, to creatively explore a re-imagined future for the Khoe community into visual art, paintings, poetry, photography, and augmented reality.

Re/member Your Descendants

Re/Member Your Descendants asks the question: if you were an ancestor, what would your descendants call upon you for? Through a series of interviews, it explores the legacy of today’s youth in South Africa. Video interviews interact with illustrations, music and poetry on a digital layer and tell a new innovative South African folk tale through augmented reality. These young people interact with their own spirituality during the interviews and name themselves as ancestors.

Anathi: Afrika burn documentary

AfrikaBurn is an official Burning Man regional event, held at Quaggafontein in the Tankwa Karoo, in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. Anathi is an initiative dedicated to the transformative power of inclusion and self-expression in the Karoo Desert. Anathi Tickets and Access Grants are offered in recognition of the disparity within South Africa and acknowledges that many economically marginalised individuals don’t have the means to partake in AfrikaBurn.

In this speculative fiction piece Black Boi goes on a hero’s journey through a South Africa that needs reminding of its own light to confront the Boogeyman. Set in Black Boi’s shack, which becomes a representation of his own masculinity, different aspects of South African culture come to confront him.
