Matter – Of Time Music Initiative, A New Age Artistry & ubiquity collaboration

NewAgeArtistry in Partnership with ubiquity(u.creativespace) is proud to announce the “Matter – Of Time” Music Inititative, a collaborative effort between two entities in the creative and entertainment industry who’s mission is to become a catalyst in the development of careers of artists in the country. The initiative is set to uncover some of the best uprising talent in S.A’s music industry.

This years’ selection consisted of a number of artists from South Africa’s very own Capital City, Pretoria. The 1st phase of the programme involves the release of the compilation Mixtape titled “Matter”. The Matter Mixtape Vol.1 was released on 8th of March 2021, and will continue to do so in future annualy on the same date. Our chosen candidates for this years’ initiative were Rorisang Sechele, Diteboho , Tjipo Malankan, Haikuu, J.A.R.E.D, Thabiso Thabethe and Rivoningo.

  1. Rorisang Sechele

One of the standout creatives featured on this yearsโ€™ project is Rorisang Sechele who had 3 contributions for the recently released Matter Mixtape. Her well-recieved songs include the opening record โ€œBlue Skiesโ€ produced by Ohteeh, an original soulful composition titled โ€œSilenceโ€ & an interlude comprised of a mash-up rendition of AKAโ€™s Donโ€™t Forget To Pray and Drakeโ€™s Started From The Bottom.

Rorisang is a vocalist and musician who was born and raised in Pretoria. She started singing in the sixth grade when she joined a choir called Jacaranda Childrenโ€™s Choir which contributed to her musical development. She attended Pro Arte Alphen Park, a High School which laid a foundation for her as she was classically trained.

In 2017, she matriculated and obtained a distinction in Music and was invited to perform at the National School of Arts in Johannesburg for being one of the Top 20 items in Gauteng which was chosen during the final practical Grade 12 music exams. Rorisang is currently studying Jazz and Popular music at the Tshwane University of Technology.

She has participated in the Standard Bank Youth Jazz Festival (2018) and had the privilege of performing alongside Lisette Spinnler, Nthabiseng Motsepe and Zenzi Makeba-Lee. She is a part of a band called TreamDeam that participated in a competition called Battle of The Bands which was hosted by the UJ Arts and Culture festival. Making it as the second runner gave them an opportunity to be the opening act for Spha Mdlalose and Titi Luzipo. She has also had the privilege of being featured on Jazz It Out.

2. Diteboho

The second track on the recently released Mixtape is an original composition from musician and pianist Diteboho. With 2 contributions on the compilation, the second being โ€œUntitledโ€, a stellar Jazz record which serves as the outro, Diteboho has added a rare element of sound and talent to this yearโ€™s initiative that weโ€™re grateful for.

Raised in the streets of Sebokeng in the Vaal triangle, Teboho โ€˜DiTebohoโ€™ Kobedi first laid hands on the keyboard as a member of the local church worship band. Also singing and arranging for his high school all male vocal ensemble and watching his father play guitar, Teboho developed a deep love for music. Today, at the age of 27, Teboho is an educator at the Tshwane University of Technology; where he also acquired a BTech qualification in Jazz and Popular music.

Having also worked as a music educator and instructor for various schools, UNISA and the State Theatre incubator program, Teboho is intentional about contributing to music education. He spends some of his time at the University where he has qualified for a Bmus(hons) and has been accepted into the Masters postgraduate program. His arrangement of the timeless Yakhalโ€™inkomo carried him to the semifinals of the Samro overseas scholarship competition in 2017. With his rendition of an original composition Moriti wa Phomolo doing the same for the Unisa National Piano competition in 2019.

Performing alongside artists such as Tribute Birdie Mboweni, Viwe Mkizwana, Keo Kolwane, Nhlanhla Mahlangu, Mathunzi & the Verse and Ntsika to name a few; he has honed a solid skill for live performance, production & recording as well as arrangement and composition.

3. Tjipo Malankan

Bringing a soul kasi rap sound on the Matter Mixtape Vol.1 is Tjipo Malankan whoโ€™s 3 songs โ€œOkwamanjeโ€, Micotevi Love Life and Born This Way taken from his latest release Okwamanje Mixtape add a unique feature to the project. His lyricism and witty lines brew up a rare formula that has listeners begging for more.

Sipho is a 27 year old fine artist who is also a musician (most likely a rapper) based in Pretoria, currently a 3rd year student at TUT Arts campus, and volunteering in a curatorship program at the Pretoria art museum. He specialises in both printmaking and Sculpture. He started exploring with different materials and surfaces, while I also write music based on everyday life.

Born in Gauteng, Alexandra then moved to Limpopo to his motherโ€™s family, Tjipo then came to Pretoria to start being involved in the art world. With discipline from a township and a rural area he got to enjoy working with how people from both places perceive reality. He also get to explore different human behavior as he visited different places to perform my music.

4. Haikuu

Bringing from both worlds a lyrical and vocal ability, Haikuu is a powerhouse artist whoโ€™s classic record titled โ€œBeyondโ€ rubberstamps his credentials as a multi-talented creative. This self-produced is Haikuuโ€™s only contribution to the mixtape โ€œMatter Vol.1โ€.

Born in Sabie, Mpumalanga (South Africa) and based in Pretoria, Haikuu is an Indie Rap Fusion artist who draws inspiration from hip hop and guitar music. At the core of his music is the idea of storytelling, which allows his raps to co-exists synergistically with his chosen guitar soundscapes.

As an individual who had to recover from a chronic, metabolic illness, he has determined to create music that is meaningful and impactful, while also being fun and engaging. He plays multiple instruments including rhythm and lead guitar, piano, bass guitar and drums.

5. Rivoningo

โ€œNcininiโ€ is the 11th track on the Matter Mixtape Vol.1 by Rivoningo, a Soweto Pimville born vocalist. This soulful offering on a Tom Misch beat was recorded in 2021 specifically for the Mixtape and has recieved positive feedback ever since itโ€™s emergence on the day of the release.

Rivoningo Bonnie Nkuna is an artist based in Pretoria East, born in Soweto Pimville ; she descends from a culture rich family , who got her vocal genes from her talented father Matsambo Nkuna , whoโ€™s been featured on projects with artists like Tebs David ; she started actively participating in the arts back in primary school, entering competitions and being actively part of school events/concerts, not only participating but in coordinating the school events.

Rivoningo is one of the founding members of the Hoerskool C.R Swart 09 School Choir and founding member of the schools first ever Music School Band. She is a Arts Entrepreneur who is looking to change and challenge the industry by always bringing innovative ways to how the arts are already perceived ; she is open minded in her way of work and allows to express herself against all odds always looking for a new venture and challenge in the arts.

She is the founder of a Afro Soul Jazz band called Music Flair founded in March 2014 which has done extremely well for itself sharing and opening stages with prominent artists all around South Africa. The group won the Standard Bank Joy Of Jazz Festival #discover competition hosted at The Sandton Convention Centre (2017) sharing stages with international musical giants; her work has led her sharing stages with the likes of Sbongile Khumalo, Vusi Mhlasela, Lady Smith Black Mambazo,Ringo,Caphius Semenya And Letta Mbuli and a whole lot more prominent South African artists around the country, also landing an opportunity to be part of the South African State Theatre Incubator Programme 2018/2019; hosting a music concert as part of A EP Launch called โ€˜Music Flair โ€“ Humble Beginningsโ€™.

She has a immense passion for radio and has worked on stations like Tshwane Fm 93. 6 and Radio PLAY; and has done MCโ€™ing events ; like โ€“ 6th Annual International Vavasati Festival Launch At The South African State Thetare and at private events and functions. She is part of The South African State Theatre Youth Choir as the newly appointed Musical Director ;and has Been Feautred In plenty of Professional Productions Like ; Freedom The Musical โ€“ Directed By Aubrey Sekhabi , Mother And Child, โ€˜Isambulo The Musical ; Ingoma An African Journey (World Choir Games) And Diketso, Sol Plaatjie, Mother and Child Directed by Joseph Komani, Imizwilili to name a few.

Rivoningo has done a whole lot of backing vocal gigs for a whole lot of artists like, Duduzile Makhoba, Bonafied BILI, Mandla Ntalks, Thabang Mavunga, Rebecca Malope, Takie Ndou to name a few. Rivoningo has now officially went SOLO and is working on an exciting 5 song EP called VUTOMI ; sheโ€™s perfomed on stages like Market at the Sheds, Tshwane MAhofi Festival, The Art in MUSIC to name a few

6. J.A.R.E.D

Coming in on the 6th & 8th track from our Matter Mixtape Vol.1 is Jared Reddy who goes by the stage name J.A.R.E.D (Just Another Rapper Encouraging Depth) with impeccable rhyme scheme and flow on his songs โ€œChange Of Profitsโ€ & โ€œPerfect Timingโ€. His record Perfect Timing is taken off his 2019 project โ€œIamJ.A.R.E.Dโ€ released on his birthday 27th Januray.

JARED REDDY (born January 1994) is a South African performing hip-hop artist and songwriter. Based in Pretoria Jared has toured South Africa along with an artistic collective called Flamengobackpackers in 2017. He has released three solo extended plays projects 2016โ€“Off The Grid, 2018-Spending Time & Life In The Cut-2020. In 2019, he release IAMJared playlist via soundcloud consisting of original compositions and songwriting.

The 2nd phase of the initiative will see all the artists who are part of the compilation Mixtape officially come together to release an album titled “Of Time”.

All selected artists only knew the identity of the other involved contributors after the mixtape dropped, and only then will they get to work on material for the album set to release 04th of July 2021.
